1 Day Spearfishing Course
Learn to Spearfish with our intro to Spearfishing Course!
Locations: Seal Rocks / Nelson Bay - NSW
Duration: 1 full day (7 hours)
Prerequisites: Be a confident swimmer and able to swim 200m unaided. You do not need to have completed a freediving course to come
Gear Needed: Just freediving gear. You do not need your own speargun to attend, we will have a training speargun for you to practice with and have gear hire available
Spots Per Course: 8 people
Who is this course suitable for? Complete Beginners to those who have only been spearfishing a couple of times, or those with 'all the gear and no idea'
Whats Included:
- 2.5 hour morning theory and practical skills session
- 2 hour dive skills session & target practice
- 2.5 hour post- dive theory and fish preparation session.
These sessions will be run over a full day and will involve a mixture of interactive theory sessions and open water dive sessions. Here’s what you’ll be learning:
- Spearfishing Gear Basics
- Basic Freediving techniques for spearfishing (Breath-hold, equalisation, technique)
- Fish identification basics, ethics and local laws of spearfishing.
- How to load a speargun with ease
- Basic hunting tactics that will increase your success rate
- Fish/Bottom Approach
- Landing Fish Correctly (how to safely secure and dispatch your catch once it's been shot)
- How to grab lobsters/harvest abalone
- Spearfishing safety including shark behaviour and reducing your risk of negative interactions
- Dive buddy 101
- How to clean & scale a fish
- How to filet a fish (and the difference between when to fillet/ when to gut & scale)
- Seafood storage/preparation
You will be coached by our freediving & spearfishing instructors, who have over 15 years of experience spearfishing, have shot Australian record fish and have taught students from never ever ability levels, to now comfortably spearfishing at 30 metres plus in depth.
Asides from experience, our spearfishing instructors are passionate about helping to educate others on this life changing skill and won't hold back in sharing their knowledge of the techniques required to capture incredible fish.
Gear Hire
If you need to hire all of the freediving gear, the cost is $40pp for the day.
Make sure you possess a current NSW fishing licence before going spearfishing and download the FishSmart app (nsw.gov.au) to check NSW's local fishing regulations and marine park locations before heading out spearfishing.
